We are struggling with our teenager over what he should and should not be reading. He is not accepting very easily that as parents we should be limiting him now because of his age. He is 14. We unfortunately let him read the Harry Potter series and he now throws that back into our faces every chance he gets when we won't let him get anything of that nature to read. He is picky on the books he likes to read and apparently there isn't a big enough selection at the Christian book store but Barnes and Noble is more open to the ugly discussions we end up having. Any suggestions on how to handle this without a big blow up every time he wants to buy a book?
I don't have any wisdom to offer on book selection or really how to handle the struggle, but I do want to applaud you guys for havinga 14 year old boy who likes to read. As you navigate the choices of what to read, my only advice (if you can call it that) is to continue encouraging him to read and celebrating the fact that he enjoys it.
I do know that Ted Dekker has a series called The Lost Book Series that seems pretty popular with teens and young adults.
I'm a huge Ted Dekker fan-- I have nearly all his books. I think the Lost Books Series would be fine for a 14-year-old. His other books deal with some pretty deep stuff so I'd recommend perhaps reading those before he does and decide from there. Although I know a LOT of young teens who read Ted's other books.
